The Temple University Co-Responder Program is a partnership between Tuttleman Counseling Services (TCS) and the Temple University Police Department that provides a compassionate, trauma-informed response to behavioral health incidents on campus and the North Philadelphia community.
Co-responders work in conjunction with Temple University Police and Public Safety personnel during incidents involving mental health crises or individuals experiencing heightened emotional distress. The co-responders provide clinical assessment, crisis intervention services, de-escalation practices, and connections to appropriate clinical and follow-up care, which allows officers to focus on scene safety, stabilization, and maintaining a secure environment for everyone involved.
The program enhances the Temple University Police Department's ability to respond effectively to behavioral health crises by integrating clinical expertise into emergency responses across campus. Through this collaborative approach, co-responders help reduce the occupational stress associated with managing high-intensity situations by supporting officers and sharing responsibility for crisis response.
By combining public safety and behavioral health expertise, the program improves crisis de-escalation, reduces barriers to accessing mental health care, and connects individuals with appropriate campus and community resources. This integrated approach promotes safety, dignity, and well-being throughout the Temple University community.
