Group therapy is a supportive and effective way to work through personal challenges and benefit from the company of peers who can relate to what you’re going through. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, stress in relationships, or just feeling stuck or overwhelmed, research consistently shows group therapy is as just as helpful as individual therapy for many concerns (Burlingame et al., 2016; Burlingame & Strauss, 2021; learn more). It is especially useful for issues that impact relationships, such as:
- Social anxiety
- Feelings of isolation
- Grief and loss
- Life transitions (e.g., transfer, upcoming graduation)
- Stress related to identity
- Difficulties with friendships, family, or romantic relationships
In group, students experience the relief of knowing they’re not alone and grow through opportunities to give and receive feedback, learn from others, and experiment with new behaviors in real time (Lo Coco et al., 2022; Yalom & Leszcz, 2020).
These dynamics make group therapy an effective way to move toward change and personal development. It’s a core service at TCS that supports hundreds of students each academic year. Our facilitators are committed to creating a respectful, inclusive environment where students of all identities and backgrounds are welcomed and valued. Groups honor each participant’s unique experiences and therapeutic needs.
