Group Therapy & Skills Classes

TCS provides a range of therapy groups and skills classes each semester. Participating in group-based care is a powerful way to address personal challenges and learn new coping strategies. Members benefit from personalized support from their group therapists. They also connect with peers who share similar goals, identities, or life experiences.

Group sessions are available from Monday to Thursday during the Summer I and II semesters, both online and in person.

Therapy Groups

Group therapy is an effective treatment option for many mental health concerns. It provides social support, fosters insight, and enhances coping skills in settings that often reflect real-life scenarios more closely than one-on-one therapy. This approach is particularly beneficial for addressing concerns with interpersonal dimensions, such as:

  • Social anxiety
  • Feelings of isolation
  • Grief
  • Life transitions
  • Identity-related stress or harm
  • Difficulties with friendships, family, or dating

Additionally, group therapy has proven effective for conditions like depression, generalized and social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and reducing substance use, among other concerns (American Psychological Association, 2012; learn more).

At TCS, most groups offer a brief individual meeting with the group leaders for interested students before sessions begin. This ensures a good fit and helps participants understand what to expect before their group experience begins.

Skills Classes

Skills classes are designed to equip you with psychological tools that align with your goals and help in alleviating various common mental health issues. Among the skills taught in TCS classes are:

  • Grounding
  • Mindfulness
  • Distress tolerance
  • Interpersonal effectiveness
  • Organization and time management

Classes are available in sequences of 4, 5, and 6 weeks, depending on the specific offering. In most cases, you can join a class at any point during the semester. Past participants have shared that our skills classes have helped reduce their daily stressors, and improved their problem-solving abilities and self-confidence. Skills classes are a therapeutic service that is free and not credit-bearing.
